The State Russian Museum is the country’s first state museum of fine art. The idea of the establishment belonged to the Emperor Alexander III. The Museum was founded in 1895 by the Emperor Nicholas II, Alexander’s III son. The grand opening for visitors occurred on March, 7(19) 1898.
Nowadays, the Russian Museum is an architectural complex consisting of the Mikhailovsky, Marble, and Stroganov Palaces; the Mikhailovsky (Engineers’) Castle; the House of Peter the Great; and gardens and parks – the Summer Garden with the Summer Palace of Peter the Great and the Mikhailovsky Gardens. Unique in their architecture and interior decoration, the palaces were designed by famous architects such as Domenico Trezzini, Francesco Rastrelli, Antonio Rinaldi, Vasily Bazhenov, Vincenzo Brenna, and Carlo Rossi.
In present days the collection of the museum consists of more than 400 000 museum-pieces.
The main museum’s exposition is located in the Mikhailovsky Palace. The Mikhailovsky Palace was built by the architect Carlo Rossi between 1819 and 1825 for Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich, the younger brother of Emperor Alexander I. The Benois Wing was originally built as exhibitionary pavillion of the Academy of Arts by the architects Leonty Benois and Sergei Ovsyannikov between 1914 and the 1920s. The collection covers all the historical periods, forms, genres, styles, trends, and schools embracing a thousand years (11th-21st centuries). . On display in the Museum’s halls are icons, 18th century portraits, works by artists from the St Petersburg Academy of Arts and members of artistic circles abroad of the 19th and 20th centuries – the World of Art and the Union of Russian Artists, works by avant-garde artists of the beginning of 20th century, such as Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, and Pavel Filonov.
In the Marble Palace, an exhibition of contemporary Russian and non-Russian art has opened.
In the Mikhailovsky Castle, the Faces of Russia portrait gallery is on display, as well as the Open Fund of Sculpture from the 19th--21st centuries.
In the halls of the Stroganov Palace, the unique interior, done according to the designs of the best architects of the 18th and 19th centuries, has been reconstructed, and a collection of objects acquired by former residents of the Palace can be found here.
The Summer Garden is one of the symbols of the Northern Capital and the first monument of landscape architecture in St Petersburg. The traits of different historical epochs are visible within it. The layout of the walkways, the Summer Palace of Peter the Great, Karp Pond, and the sculpture collection have been preserved to present day.
The House of Peter the Great – the oldest building in St Petersburg – was constructed during the first days of the city’s founding.
The Museum’s collection is increasing with every year as new works by masters of Russian art, donated by collectors and the heirs and descendants of artists, or acquired at international auctions.
